ZOLTEK Chopped Carbon Fiber (Superior Performance for Molding Applications)

Chopped carbon fiber is a highly favored material for injection and compression molding applications, known for producing components that are exceptionally durable, corrosion-resistant, and rigid. These qualities make it ideal for manufacturing machine parts and gears that endure long operational periods with minimal wear and tear.

ZOLTEK’s signature line of chopped carbon fiber materials is engineered to meet specific application needs, offering cleaner and more consistent flow rates due to their high bulk density. Often compounded with general engineering thermoplastics such as PC and Nylon, as well as high-temperature thermoplastic resins like PEEK and PEI, these composites achieve an industry-leading strength-to-weight ratio. This makes them perfect for applications that demand stronger and more rigid materials.

Additionally, ZOLTEK’s chopped carbon fibers distribute easily during the compounding process, enhancing both the process efficiency and the performance of the final product. ZOLTEK PX35 Chopped Fibers are versatile and available in various forms, including pellets, flakes, and sticks. Explore our extensive collection of chopped fiber products to find the perfect solution for your needs.

Innovative Carbon Fiber Technology for Sheet Molding Compound (SMC)

In collaboration with Toray, ZOLTEK has pioneered an advanced technology and input material for Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) used in compression molding. SMC is a composite material made from resin and chopped carbon fiber, placed into matched metal tooling to mold finished parts.

Our new carbon fiber tow product retains the large tow size (50K) but is now split into 3K sub-tows. When chopped, these sub-tows break apart into a homogeneous, isotropic bed of small tow carbon fiber, which easily wets out in the SMC process. This innovation results in an exceptionally strong and stiff composite part, ideal for automotive and other applications.

The final parts molded from SMC benefit from a high-throughput compounding process combined with low-cost inputs (resin and fiber). The molding process is highly efficient, with more than 97% of the compound utilized in the final molded part, minimizing edge trim and other waste.
