Zoltek has been named as a finalist for a JEC Innovation Award. Zoltek, in partnership with Audi AG, Voith Composites GmbH & Co. KG, and Dow Automotive, is a finalist in the Automotive Process category. The team developed a carbon rear wall module using high-volume CFRP production. The resulting part is cost-efficient without sacrificing the high-performance properties and allows for design freedom in high-volume, fully-automated production with capacity for more than 300 parts/day.

The use of Zoltek PX35 resulted in a rear wall structure that contributes 33% to the torsional rigidity of the vehicle and is still 50% lighter. Layers of carbon fiber are stacked one on top of the other with varying orientations. This works to absorb longitudinal and transverse loads and shear forces.

Finalists are being judged by a jury of experts and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 7, 2018 at JEC World.
